Paying it forward, I do not mean at a line-up for coffee….
I originally drove by this memorial on my motorcycle, I just caught it out of the corner of my eye. I said to myself that I would come back to check it out. I did a year later.
What struck me was that it was out in the middle of nowhere…I thought. What I did not know was that I was in the neighbourhood of one of the original early Polish settlements in Canada. A pleasent place to be, all the countryside, a crystal clear lake close by, and some excellent sunny skies. Truth be known when the Polish arrived it was all forested and what land did not have trees on it was rock… lots and lots of rock. So as immigrants they had no choice, survive or not. The Polish did as well as can be expected and they flourished.
What I learned about this memorial was that it was dedicated to the “Grey Ranks” or ( “SZARE SZERREGI” ) and it was erected by the Polish Scouting Association in Canada on the 50th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, to honour the girl and boy scouts who fought and gave their lives in the service of God, Poland and the cause of freedom.
Two things come to mind, first these boys and girls were young..very young I’m thinking in the 14-18 age group and secondly..were they doing what was right? Or were they paying it forward for the rest of us…
